Nancy Barlar - Music Education Faculty

 Dr. Nancy Barlar first came to the Florida College faculty as an adjunct in 1999 and continued in that capacity until 2015, when she was moved to full-time.  Along with being a full-time professor, Dr. Barlar is also an adjunct instructor for University of South Florida, Hillsborough Community College, and Saint Leo University. Her teaching focuses are music education, music literature, applied music in clarinet and saxophone, and non-major piano class.
Dr. Barlar received her Doctor of Musical Arts in music education from Boston University in 2010, a Master of Music in clarinet performance from the University of Memphis in 1999, a B.S. in music education from the University of South Florida in 1996, and an A.A. from Florida College in 1994.  Prior to devoting herself to teaching at the college level full-time, she was the band director at Adams Middle School from 2000-2010. Her bands were regularly rated Superior at District Music Performance Assessments. Dr. Barlar was the general music specialist at Sulphur Springs Elementary from 1999-2000, and the music department earned the title of Florida Music Demonstration School from the Florida Music Educator’s Association.  While at the University of Memphis, Dr. Barlar was the graduate assistant for bands and taught music at a local preschool.  
Dr. Barlar has been integral to the start of FC’s music education program by developing many of the courses and helping to write the documents for the state Department of Education that led to the degree’s approval by the State of Florida.  Dr. Barlar is a woodwind adjudicator for the Florida Bandmasters Association.  Her research interests center on connections between music and language reading, and she was published in Perspectives: A publication of the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association in 2011.   In addition, Dr. Barlar has been very involved in distance learning as an educator, course developer, and coordinator.
